Conference weekend

I am happy to say that we have been pretty busy the last few weeks.  Today was General Conference and transfers.  Because we are so far from the Mission Headquarters, the missionaries from this zone leave Sunday night for transfers Monday morning. We have 14 missionaries in this zone; every companionship has a change this transfer.  That makes for lots of goodbyes. We have had a couple of special experiences.  We are still reading with Eddie.  We are in 4 Nephi.  Eddie now says the prayer after our Book of Mormon reading regularly.  He is a sweet, humble man. It will be strange not to call him every night and hear his happy voice.  We had the opportunity to teach the Plan of Salvation to (Angel) the caregiver of one of the homebound sisters that we visit every Friday.  The next week we showed Angel a video about why we needed the Restoration.  I think she is interested.  I hope we can get into her home to teach.   We a...

Rainy Days

It has been a little rainy in northern California.  In the first video, which is very short, you might notice the cows are trapped.  No way to get to land.  I understand that there was a death connected to the flooding here.  A farmer got trapped in his barn and tried to wade through the swiftly moving water to get to his house.  The neighbors drove their tractor out to help him, but they needed to be rescued and the farmer didn't make it. I hope the videos work. Elder Wecker had an interesting day yesterday. Wednesday, February 27, 2019 Today we were scheduled to pick up Eddie Martell for a discussion with the elders.  Eddie had gone to the church early to fill a cleaning assignment with Brother and Sister Richards.  When Sister Wecker and I arrived at the church, I went to find Eddie.  In crossing through the chapel, there was a woman there crying.  I did not disturb her, but went into the foyer.  While standing there, the...

A New Year

Just a short update for those of you who might be keeping tabs on Eddie.  He was baptized on Dec 29.  It was lovely.  He is very happy.  He was able to find a couple of family names to take to the temple to do baptisms for the dead.  We took him up to the Medford Temple Saturday, Jan. 12.  The sun came out for the second day in a row, so the drive was lovely.  And holding to my holiday theory, the elk were out crossing the road and holding up traffic.  It was fantastic.  We continue to read with him and a few others.

Study techniques

We are beginning to love it here in Eureka.  We especially love not having to shovel any snow.  I think I will make a few remarks about how we are learning the gospel.  First of all, we study the gospel in a couple of different ways.  We are watching and listening to all of President Nelson's conference talks.  We felt it was important to get to know him. His talks are very doctrinal.  And for two years in a row, he wore the same tie 😊 We both completed President Nelson's challenge to read the Book of Mormon before the end of the year. We started our mission by watching all the available Mormon Messages.  We have used these short videos to help review the gospel with people we visit. We read the Book of Mormon every night with an investigator who will be baptized tomorrow.  We will continue reading with him until we finish the book.  We are in Alma. We have read Preach My Gospel together. Our latest study practice is to list all the i...

Thanksgiving on the road

We had a lovely visit with Nate and his family for Thanksgiving.  We are so blessed to be close enough to visit.  Though Medford is out of our mission area, we can easily get special permission to visit family.  On the way to Nate's we stopped to watch a couple of bull elks fighting.  It was a once in a lifetime experience. We also recently took a hike through  Fern Canyon.  Parts of Jurassic Park were filmed in this canyon.  The hike involves walking through streams.  We did get wet, but it was quite lovely. We are one of 3 MLS senior couples in this mission.  The first couple to arrive has already left.  They were only here for 6 months.  During their time here they took many families to the temple and reactivated about 35 members.  The other senior couple here, the Mullins, have been transferred to cover the area where the first couple was having such success.  Now there are just the two couples.  We hope t...

Eureka life

Everyday we look out and the weather is again perfect.  Not too hot and not too cold.  We did have to scrape some frost off the windshield of the car a couple of times, but just because we were up before the sun had a chance to do its work. I thought I might mention the wildlife around here.  The other senior couple in the mission sends the mission President a weekly wildlife report.  They are here from Texas.  I guess deer and elk are less common in their part of the world.  I am ashamed to say that I don't even notice them anymore, but we have deer and elk.  Because we live so close to the Humboldt Bay and the Pacific Ocean, we see lots of water birds.  We regularly see white egrets and white ibis and cormorants.  Cormorants are the fishing bird of China. We sometimes see  great blue herons.  Of course there are lots of ducks and geese. The new bird we saw this week is a black-crowned night heron. This week a seal came up quit...

Tall trees

Last month we had a lovely visit with the other MLS senior missionaries.  We went to Montgomery State Reserve which for many years boasted having the tallest redwood tree in the world.  As often happens with records of that sort, someone found a taller tree in the same forest, but not in the same park. We have been spending most of our time visiting with the members of the Eureka Ward.  Some of them are more active than others, but all have a story to tell.  We love the people here. I have personally been getting braver about declaring the gospel and its many truths to people we meet.  I even took my hairdresser a Book of Mormon this week. Last week we went to Patrick's Point.  It is a little park right on the coast.  We saw a whale.  Unfortunately, it only surfaced once while we were there and we didn't get a picture.  It was pretty exciting! This morning I watched the seals play in the bay outside the gym we visit each morning. ...
